Announcing NIKKI DAWE as this year's Corporate Walk Chair
I'm proud to work for Tommy Hilfiger, a company that believes in giving back to the community. It was Tommy Hilfiger's parent company, PVH Corporation that introduced the Light The Night campaign to store level. I made my first personal connection with blood cancers the first year that Halifax held the walk in 2011, when a member of my Tommy Hilfiger family was diagnosed with Leukemia. I'll never forget the day or moment in time where this was no longer a campaign, but a journey to do everything I could to raise money, and most of all hope, for him and everyone affected by blood cancer.
My involvement continued to grow during the 2012 campaign, and I found myself canvassing the streets of Halifax for donations. Although this was something I never thought I would do, as a Team Captain I found this to be an invaluable experience in order to motivate my teammates to do the same. I also wanted to think outside the box and elevate our goal potential by reaching out to more people and expanding our message. Throughout fundraising, I had the opportunity to interact with many people and share their personal journey with blood cancers. I began to collect the names of those individuals and asked if I may walk in their honour during the walk. When the night of the walk finally arrived, I had over fifty names written on my t-shirt and as I entered the kilometer of silence, I felt the spirit of each and every one of them with me. This was a powerfully moving moment for me -- one that I'll never forget. Light The Night goes beyond the banners and balloons, it connects the hearts of everyone sharing this journey together- providing support and hope to those in need.
I cannot express my heartfelt gratitude enough to all family, friends and the staff of Dartmouth and Moncton. Thank you for all your support and creative ideas for fundraising. You're an inspiration to me. To all of the customers who so graciously donated at the cash register over the past two years, we would never have doubled our goal last year without you. Finally, to everyone I've met through the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, I'm so thankful and completely honoured for the opportunity to represent you.
